Nepal's roads reward drivers who leave without a fixed schedule. This guide maps out the routes worth driving from Kathmandu — organized by how much time you have, from a 90-minute sunrise run to a five-day expedition into the Himalayas.

Planning Basics: Distance, Time, and Charging

Drive times in Nepal don't scale the way they do on flat highways elsewhere — mountain roads mean 100 km can take two or three times longer than the same distance on a straight motorway. Every route below lists realistic drive time, not straight-line distance divided by an assumed speed.

For EV road trips specifically, charging availability varies by corridor. Major routes like Kathmandu–Pokhara and Kathmandu–Chitwan have fast chargers along the way. Remote routes like Rara or Ilam have limited infrastructure, and require a charging plan built in advance — which our team does for every renter before departure, regardless of route.

Short Escapes (Half Day to 2 Days)

Nagarkot — 32 km, ~1.5 hours

Pokhara — 200 km, ~6 hours

Lumbini — 280 km, ~7 hours

Upper Mustang — 340 km, ~10 hours (one way)

Route length and terrain should drive (no pun intended) your vehicle choice:
